Liturgy and Worship

Altar Server Ministry

The Altar Server Ministry is open to all adult and youth registered in the parish who have made their first Communion.  The youth servers are required to attend the Faith Formation program for their age, or the youth group programs.

Sacristans

Sacristans work behind the scenes.  They prepare everything needed for the celebration of the Mass each week.  The Sacristan must work well with all others who are involved in the preparation of the celebration of the Mass.

Lectors

The ministry of Lector is a highly visible ministry.  Lectors proclaim the Words of the Lord during the Liturgy and lad the General Intercessions.  A lector must have a passion for Scripture; an ability to interpret and understand Scripture.  This ministry is open to all adults and youth registered in the parish, who have made their first Communion.  Anyone interested in becoming a lector.

Offertory/Gift Bearers

If you as an individual or a family would like to help bring up the gifts at our Saturday or Sunday liturgy please notify an usher upon arrival at Mass.

Ushers/Greeters

The usher greets parishioners as they enter the Church.  They reflect the warmth and welcome of Christ himself, always conscious of Christ’s words:  “I was a stranger and you welcomed me”. Much of the ushers’ work is done behind the scenes.  They help with preparations for a liturgy, preparing bulletins for distribution, and taking care of food collected at the liturgy.  They arrange for people to carry the gifts in procession during Mass and assist with emergencies.  During Mass, ushers assist with “traffic flow” at Communion, take collections.  Ushers must report to church at least 20 minutes early.  They work in teams at each Mass and can expect to serve weekly.

Music Ministry

Our Music Ministry is comprised of ministers who are truly dedicated to making the liturgical music a prayerful and uplifting worship experience.  We serve our parish community by encouraging and assisting the congregation to sing.  We practice on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. in the Church (Sept. – April)

Cantors

Cantors are a vital part of our music ministry.  It is the cantor’s responsibility to welcome the congregation to Mass, announce the songs, lead the songs or hymns during the liturgy while encouraging the congregation to participate in sung prayer.  Requirements/qualifications:  An audition is required.  Cantors should ideally be studying voice privately or have significant choral experience.  Cantors must be able to read music.

Instrumentalists

Those blessed with the gift of being able to play an instrument are welcome to share their talents with our parish community.  Membership is open to men and women of high school age and older.  Requirements:  Musically trained with the ability to read music and transpose if necessary, and be comfortable playing in front of a large congregation.

Art & Environment

This ministry helps decorate and prepare the environment for liturgical celebrations throughout the year.  Time required is on “as needed” basis.

Knights of Columbus

LINK:   Knights of Columbus Council 12155

Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1882 as a fraternal benefit society.  The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.  Since its founding in 1882, the Knights of Columbus has grown to 13,000 councils throughout the United States and in several other countries.

Members of the Knights of Columbus are men of character who strive to serve church, community, families, youth, fellowship, and pro-life activities.  CHURCH:  Knights support their church.  For example, they help support education of seminarians, they annually recognize the work done by our altar servers, and they are contributing to the cost of constructing the new Cabrini Center.  COMMUNITY:  Knights serve their community.  They sponsor blood drives every other month on the church campus, they work with Special Olympics, and they solicit funds through the so-called "tootsie roll" drive to support programs for handicapped people.  FAMILY:  The council holds a number of family-focused events each year.  Examples are the annual Columbus Day picnic for knights and squires and their families, their role in the parish's fall festival, and annually they have a special dinner for wives and widows who contribute so much to their programs.  YOUTH:  Our council sponsors St. Dominic Savio Squires Circle -- an organization that is quickly being recognized for its service to both church and community.  Other youth activities include a soccer challenge, a spelling bee, and a basketball free throw competition for young boys and girls of the area.

Goals of the group are to:
--Reach out to people hurt after abortion.
--Educate the public that abortion is harmful emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
--Share personal testimonies of hurt and healing to help others avoid the pain of abortion.
--Partner with other pro-life events in the area.
Regional coordinator is Darlene Wood-Harvey, who also is a participant in the abortion-day Prayer Vigil in front of Sarasota Planned Parenthood.  She carries her "I regret my abortion" sign.  On the web site, Darlene tells her story: "Planned Parenthood's abortionist killed my only child and I am childless.
